Philadelphia Flyers: Fighters To The Core
In 1967, the NHL began a period of major expansion to effectively double the size of the league. The Philadelphia Flyers were created during this period and became the first of the 1967 expansion teams to win the Stanley Cup (trouncing the Boston Bruins in 1974). Throughout the franchise's career, the team have accumulated numerous division and conference titles, though the Stanley Cup has eluded them for decades.
Bigger, Tougher, Meaner
In 1969, Bud Poile, the team's General Manager made a decision that would have a lasting impact on the team and the NHL. He began signing larger players that could physically dominate other franchises. By the end of the season, they had built a team that inspired dread and in some cases, panic amongst other players in the league. By 1972, in part because of their penchant for fighting, the Flyers were widely known as the Broad Street Bullies. It was during the Bullies' reign that the franchise won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975.
The following year, the Bullies were disbanded and traded while the team's management sought a new strategy. Despite a number of conference and division titles over the next several years, the Flyers' failed to win another Stanley Cup. Several head coaches came and went and the hopes of fans were pinned to a litany of promising new players. Unfortunately, the franchise hasn't managed to regain the domination and momentum it enjoyed during the early 1970's.
In 2007, the Flyers returned to the strategy of the past and a new group of Broad Street Bullies were groomed. Penalties and suspensions were awarded generously and the team succeeded in leading their conference and division. Whether the bullying strategy is as effective today as it once was remains to be seen.
