Montreal Canadiens: Collection Of Titles

Before there was a National Hockey League, there were the Montreal Canadiens. The franchise was created in 1909 and are known as one of the most productive teams in NHL history. In fact, with two dozen Stanley Cups, the Canadiens have won over a quarter of all championships, a feat that arguably makes them one of the most effective sports teams throughout North America.

Through The Years

In 1917, the Canadiens were one of five teams that left the National Hockey Association (NHA) and founded the NHL. During the next couple of decades, the franchise experienced their share of triumphs and failures. Some circumstances, like the 1918 Spanish flu, were unavoidable and devastated the team by leaving many of the players violently sick and claiming the life of the team's owner. Others were the result of continuous performance problems within the Canadiens' ranks. Finally, in 1940, Dick Irvin was hired to be head coach. It was a turning point for the team.

The franchise won the Stanley in twice during the 1940's and six times during the 1950's. To many teams, they seemed virtually unbeatable. And despite a slow beginning during the 1960's, the Canadiens returned home with another four titles. The NHL watched, stunned, as the team exploded through the 1970's, earning another six Stanley Cups. Unfortunately, they were about to lose their momentum.

By the 1980's, most of the players who were responsible for the Canadiens' awe-inspiring performance over the past few decades were either retired or had been traded. Despite moments of anticipation and hope over the last thirty years, the team has only emerged victorious at two Stanley Cup Finals.

While the Canadiens have yet to match the stunning performance of its heyday, they are still a legend of the NHL. They play their home games at the Bell Centre in Montreal, which has remained one of the busiest sports arenas in the world.
