Minnesota Wild: Learning The Ropes
Saint Paul, Minnesota is the home of one of the youngest franchises in the NHL: the Minnesota Wild. Founded in 2000, the team hosts home games at the Xcel Energy Center. While the Wild have yet to win a Stanley Cup title, their career is just beginning and fans have high expectations. Indeed, through the beginning of 2008, every home game since the team's first season has sold out.
From the beginning, the new franchise did things a little differently than other NHL teams. For example, First USA Bank agreed to become a sponsor for the Wild nearly three years before they played their first game. What's more, a new $130 million stadium (the Xcel Energy Center) was built for the team with half of the construction cost being paid by the State of Minnesota. Soon after, the Wild also entered a partnership with the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission, a move that was unprecedented for a sports franchise.
A Tour Of The Xcel Energy Center
The stadium is owned by the state and boasts four levels. Its seating capacity is a generous 18,064 but the attendance at the stadium has exceeded that number in the past. For example, 19,398 fans were on hand to watch the Wild's first post-lockout game on October 5, 2005. During the past few years, the Xcel Energy Center has been used for a number of other events, including hosting the rock band The Police and Senator John McCain's first speech as the Republican nominee for the Presidency in 2008.
Buying tickets to see the Minnesota Wild play live at their arena is normally easy if you purchase them in advance. As mentioned, the franchise enjoys the distinction of selling out every home game. If you wait until the day of the event, it's likely that tickets will be unavailable.
Despite the Wild's performance on the ice being lackluster, fans are excited by what the new season has in store for the team. Promising players like Kim Johnsson and Branko Radivojevic join veterans such as Pavol Demitra to inject the enthusiasm and intensity the franchise needs to earn a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals.
