Red Wings Hockey: Icons Of The NHL

The Detroit Red Wings are one of the oldest NHL teams and currently one of the most revered. The franchise was founded in 1926 and has remained in the city of their birth ever since. Originally known as the Cougars, it wasn't until 1929 that the team finally earned a spot at the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Unfortunately, another 6 years would pass before the franchise could return home with the Cup.

From Gordie Howe To The Russian Five

1946 was a transformative year as Gordie Howe joined the Red Wings' ranks. While he didn't immediately gain momentum, Howe began making his mark on the team within a few years. With teammates Sid Abel and Ted Lindsay, Howe made up the franchise's Production Line, renowned throughout the NHL for their scoring ability. In 1952, Howe led his team through the NHL's first undefeated season before earning that year's Stanley Cup.

In the late 1960's, the Red Wings entered an era of failure. So dismal was their performance that fans and the media began calling them the "Dead Wings." The next 26 years would be tainted by devastating near-misses, dismal scoring and a revolving line of coaches. In 1994, their fortunes changed dramatically. High level performers were added to the ranks and the Russian Five were born. Based upon a unique Russian hockey strategy, head coach Scotty Bowman began creating 5-man teams of forwards and defensive players. In 1997 and 1998, the Red Wings earned back-to-back Stanley Cups.

The franchise continue to be a dominating force in the NHL. Despite times during their past that were marked by disappointment, they remain the NHL team with the longest streak of playoff visits. And in 2008, the team once again won the Stanley Cup.

See The Octopus Live

In 1952, a local vendor threw a small octopus onto the ice before a game. The Red Wings' victory at the Stanley Cup Finals at the end of that season helped cement the octopus throw as a longstanding tradition. To visit the Joe Louis Arena and witness a decades-old tradition, purchase Red Wings NHL tickets for the current season and watch the icons of the NHL.
