Buffalo Sabres: Fighting For The Cup
The Buffalo Sabres were created in 1970 and currently play their home games in HSBC Arena. Their first two seasons began with good fortune. They had drafted Gilbert Perreault, a remarkable player who was destined to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Along with rookie Rick Martin and Rene Robert, Perreault would form "The French Connection," one of the NHL's most formidable forward lines during the 1970's. Unfortunately, their efforts would fail to rally the team to a Stanley Cup victory.
For nearly three decades, the Sabres languished in relative obscurity. There were moments of decided success. For example, the franchise managed to lead their division in 1980 and 1996. But, those victories were sparse and fleeting. Finally, in 1996, the team migrated to a new stadium in the hopes of reinventing themselves. But, the change in venue failed to fix deeper problems within the team.
Even as head coach Ted Nolan was awarded the Jack Adams Award for coaching distinction and star goaltender Dominik Hašek was recognized for his skills, tensions amongst the players, management and fans increased. Nolan continually battled with Hašek, leading the goalie to abandon his team during the season. When a news columnist named Jim Kelley reported on the franchise's internal fighting, Hašek assaulted him and was suspended for three games. Finally, in 2001, the Sabres washed their hands of Hašek and traded him.
The next several years were spent rebuilding the team. Changes were made to the lineup and players were traded to inject new life into the franchise. The team showed progress in 2007 and ESPN listed the Sabres at the top of a list of 122 sports teams in North American.
Ticket Prices Lowered
Ticket prices were reduced in 2003, yet remain a bit higher than many NHL franchises. That being said, Buffalo fans are passionate about their team and every game during the 2007 season sold out. Seats throughout HSBC Arena range in price from $19 to several hundred. Loyal fans expect the Sabres to post impressive results due to a number of recent additions to the lineup. To experience the excitement of the games and the renewed intensity of the team, purchase your seats well in advance.
